A Pre-Algebra Module Based on California State Math Standards -- Grade 7

 What is Algebra Anyway?

Ok, so it isn’t so magical…but once you get the hang of it – it is amazingly easy!

But what is an unknown?

An unknown is a letter, called a variable, that represents a number.  It can be any letter a      b          x          y.

Algebra!  I can’t do algebra!

Actually, you’ve been doing algebra for a long time – only you didn’t call it algebra.

EXAMPLE

 a)       2  +  4  =  x

b)       y  +  3  =  7

Just by looking at the problems in the example you know that:

                                    x =  6   because 2 + 4 = 6

                                    y =  4   because 4 + 3 = 7

Easy…right?  Well, that’s algebra.

The tricky part of algebra isn’t even really algebra.  The tricky part is when we have to use arithmetic…you know…those fractions and decimals you’ve been avoiding for years and years.  The ones you never took the time to master because you just thought they’d eventually go away!  They’re baaack!
